Authenticities, is very big on sustainable, ethical, and meaningful travel experiences, and so the DMC’s adventures often come with lots of stories. Tourists tend to head for the south coast with its exotic beaches and culturally rich coastal city, Galle, where you can stay in a Dutch fort, explore its burgeoning artisanal shopping scene, and get to grips with the country’s history at a number of museums. Eastwards along the coast, the town of Tangalle is also worth a stop. Still relatively unspoilt, it's one of the most biodiverse areas of the south and has the most beautiful golden beaches. Two of at least 20 of the country’s national parks, Udawalawe and Yala, are home to big game including leopards, particularly in the latter, and said to be better than many of the famous African parks.

  • Over to the west, Buddhist temples like Gangaramaya mingle with glassy skyscrapers in metropolitan Colombo, with its slick seafood restaurants and marvellous mishmash of cultural and colonial influences, while beachy-town Negombo offers a slightly more laid-back experience with its array of pastel-coloured churches and a lively social scene. Away from the coast, Adam’s Peak is a big-hitter for pilgrims and trekkers. The less-developed east offers places of interest like Trincomalee (hot springs, Pigeon Island National Park, and the cliffside Koneswaram Temple) and Batticaloa with its gritty Civil War history, while the Northern Province promises sights like the “Sinking Church” among the dunes of Manalkadu, the Baobab trees around Jaffna, and the undulating curves of Adam’s Bridge (natural limestone shoals).

And then there’s the Cultural Triangle, smack-dab in the middle. Here you have well-known areas like Kandy and Wasgamuwa National Park, home to lots of wild Elephants yet less-crowded. Take the famous Tea Train from Badulla to Kandy (where the Temple of the Tooth lies) through Ella and loud and colourful Hatton, one of the biggest towns and producers of tea in the hill country, and past the Nine Arch Bridge. The pounding Dunhinda Falls are worth a stop-off, as are so many of the beautiful waterfalls in this part of the country. Don’t miss Dambulla and its magnificent cave temples, either. Authenticities has a unique take on all these areas and experiences, whether that’s trekking to The Lonely Cave with the leader of a small Veddha community, exploring the prawn farms of the north, or sitting down to learn about the country’s history with ex-LTTE child soldiers, and craft bespoke itineraries in a respectful and responsible way.
